Leaving School For Money

The BBC has an article about leaving school to make money.  It says that by staying in school kids will earn more money.

This made me think about my situation, since I stayed in school for my master’s degree. I would be considered one of the ones who should earn more money.

But I only used my education for one year, during that year I made less than 1/20 of what I made doing something that had absolutely nothing to do with my education.

So I would say that my education really held me back, because I spent 5 years working on my education, plus I felt I had to work at least a year afterwards.  If I would have had those 6 years to work making money I could have made substantially more.

But realistically I would have probably just retired 6 years earlier.

I am not encouraging anyone to not go to school, I went to school a lot.  I just don’t think that it is the best way to make money.

My advice is to stay in school, but when you get out, if you truly want to make money then find someone who is making the kind of money you are interested in and then do that they are doing.  That’s how you make money.

It helps if you find something you have an interest in.  I also think it pays to do some research and see what the odds of your success are.

Here is the BBC link that got me thinking about: leaving school for money
