Buying A Website

I have been looking at buying a website for over a month now and here are a few of the things I have found out so far:

  1. Timing

It is not that easy to time it right for several reasons… some people want to sell their website sometime in the next 2 months, others want to sell their website in the next 20 minutes.

I bid on a couple websites then had the site sold to someone else within minutes after I bid.  Other times I would not hear from the owner for several days to a week.

One seller posted that I backed out of a deal about 30 minutes after I posted that I wanted to buy the site.  I send him a private message and he said that several other people had backed out on him and he just assumed that I had done the same thing.  Of course the fact that I had no idea how to pay for the site didn’t seem to motivate him to send me any kind of a post or private message as to how I could pay.

Most of the sites that are making good money and selling for a reasonable price sell in minutes.  Sometimes 3 or 4 minutes from the time they are posted.

So to catch one of these sites you really have to watch close.

  1. Time required to check out a site.

It takes some time to look at the back links, alexa ranking and other things to see if the site is worth anything.  There are a lot of sites that people are just trying to pump and dump.  (I may give examples of this later) Buying a website takes a lot of time I am not sure if it is more or less than just developing your own websites.
